We capture two lots of data. The first lot we look at is how many kilometres [players] cover at training and after games. We use that data to work out whether we are giving the players too much load or not enough load and try to ensure optimal performance. One of the main reasons we use this data is for our FFA cup games. Sometimes we will play three games in seven days. We want to make sure we get our players’ loading right so they are not at risk of injury for the next week. The other time we use the data is for the players' rehabilitation. We will take them through a 5-stage return-to-training protocol. We capture their data so we can make sure that by stage 5 (before they go back to play) they can cover that 5-6km mark they usually cover at training.
I decided to use SPT when I was preparing to return from a lower back injury. I had been trying to get back [into training] for a month or two after I was cleared, but every time I would begin to push myself, I would find that my back would begin to hurt. I realized that I was creating the problems by increasing my workload too soon. I began researching companies and products that would allow me to see the results of my training sessions so that I could use the data to slowly progress back to full fitness. After reading and educating myself on the GPS device that SPT provides, I decided that the features offered at the price point was unmatched. It is extremely user-friendly and a great way to analyze data on a day-to-day basis. I continue to use the device throughout the off-season to monitor the workload and intensity of each training session so I can better take care of my body and prepare properly for the upcoming season.
SPT Student Athlete
Our team invested in the GPS technology so we could effectively monitor the intensity and volume of our training sessions throughout the year. The technology allows us to optimize performance-training outcomes for both individuals and the team for the in-season, mid-season and off-season recovery period. For the demands of all field-based sports outdoors, SPT has been fantastic in providing us with simple parameters that are easily communicated to coaches and players alike.
Strength and Conditioning Coach
Our school purchased SPT GPS devices to use within our Physical Education/Health Department. Our students and staff have thoroughly enjoyed using 21st century technology to gain feedback and information, similar to that of professional athletes. Students are motivated to compare their data from previous performances, against other students, and to that of what a professional athlete may achieve. The devices have become a key component of our senior practical lessons, where students have applied results to make links to theory topics and content such as energy systems, fitness (training methods), concepts of physical activity, methods of assessing physical activity, movement analysis and feedback, as well as many others.

Being able to use SPT’s technology has enabled the Physiotherapists at Optimus Health to work closely with our Sports Science Team and help to reduce soft tissue injuries over the 2016/17 season. We have managed to use the GPS data to give feedback to coaches about important data and load variables, including
acute-chronic ratios and flagging players when their loads are not in a ‘sweet spot’.

We started working with SPT before the start of our 2016/17 football season. We have now been working with them for a full year and during this time, I can confirm that they have been nothing short of brilliant in supporting us at the Academy.

St John’s Old Collegians FC have been using the SPT GPS units to gather training and match data on metres run per minute and high intensity running. This has allowed us to evaluate the quality of our training in relation to the intensities our players experience during games and adjust and improve how we train. We also track total load during the week to manage our yearly macro cycle, enabling players to peak for important games and minimise significant increases in load, which may lead to a greater risk of injuries. Our players have really enjoyed seeing and using their data as motivation to improve.

Derry City have been using SPT for nearly 2 years now. The units are lightweight yet durable and the GameTraka system is user-friendly. SPT has offered us great support and are constantly evolving, allowing us to have input into the system improvements.

The GPS units have been of a real benefit for us this season with all players in the 1st XVIII wearing them for each game. We have been able to track loads with a focus on sprint efforts and high speed running. It is no coincidence that there has been a strong correlation with work rate and good performance. It has been also interesting looking at the distance covered by our players in comparison to the different size of grounds we play on.

GameTraka has become an essential part of our football program. We dipped our toes in and started with 3 units but demand and interest from the players themselves soon saw us equipping the whole team. They have all both bought into the benefits as individuals but also the data is giving everyone a strong vision of expectations and possibility of results. We have baseline figures for all positions now, expectations of efforts and performance levels that they can often see reflected in actual match results. The extra level of competition has encouraged the team to improve their personal best and prove that they deserve a starting spot. Using SPT has been fun for the players and also invaluable in their progression. Simple to use, reliable and, especially with the new “Report” feature great to share and analyze, I cannot envisage running a competitive team without the units ever again.

The SPT GPS devices have been an integral part of our club’s training and fitness programming this season. As the strength and conditioning coach of Marcellin Old Collegians Football Club this year, I have personally found the devices to be significantly beneficial. The ability to monitor training and match day running data has allowed us to quantify workloads for both individual players and the team, and therefore use them to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury. The range of variables we can track is great for players to see and allows them to compare their work-rate to teammates playing in similar positions. For a team who finished 1 spot from relegation last year, we have now finished 3rd this year and are playing finals; it would be safe to say that the SPT GPS have considerably aided our improvement.

SPT Sport GPS units have been a great product for our club here at Sorrento FC, W.A Perth. As a club, we brought in these GPS units to help us take the next step in understanding our players training loads and game loads better throughout the season. This season, the data that the GPS units have given us has been incredible - not just in understanding distance covered but by being able to analyse players' speeds (km/hr) and what zones they travel most in during a game. They also help us with the players who are coming back from injury by making sure they get back to their optimal performance before being included in the starting 11 again. We do this by analysing previous data while comparing recent results the player has clocked up. I would recommend this product to any sporting team or individual who wants to understand their performance better, giving them the knowledge on which aspects of their game they may need to improve on.

We have been using the SPT GPS system at Gold Coast City FC for half a season now and it is really starting to provide some valuable information to myself as the head coach, the staff and the players as well. I can use the information to track physical match performance and training loading, which can be helpful in injury prevention. The players also like to be aware of their stats which can only enhance their understanding of what we do and why.

The response from our student athletes was immediate. As soon as the conditioning group was finished, they all wanted to know their work output, distance and who sprinted the fastest. There is no more hiding behind “effort” because we will now be able to calculate effort. Maximizing effort is key to athletic success. Hopefully, utilizing SPT will allow us to identify specific players’ work volume and how it may affect their work output. If a player work output peaks at the wrong time or is miss calculated, this could lead to injury.

The Cranbourne FC in the South East Football Netball League have been using SPT GPS technology for the past three years to monitor and track player movement and intensity. We have been using SPT on our midfielders to help them understand the high-end gut running that is required during their matches. We are able to compare their GPS results to those of a VFL midfielders, this helps the Cranbourne boys set high benchmarks which leads to an increase in performance. We mainly look at the total distance that our midfielders run and the Zone 6 metres that they gain. I would recommend SPT to any football team based on the fact that it is a great tool from an education point of view and it gives the players a good understanding of where they need to be.

We bought 10 of the units for our football club here at the Koondrook/Barham Raiders and used them for the first time on Saturday. The results were amazing, not only could we assess total distance, it shows running patterns and top speed. A bonus that comes with the players wearing the GPS units is that they knew they couldn't hide as their running efforts were being recorded.
As the coach of the Phillip Island Football Club I have found the SPT GPS tracking devices to be an essential tool in our continued improvement. It has enabled us to monitor players' individual progress over our pre-season and now the benefits we are getting on match day data is incredible. It has helped running patterns for players and they are getting the exact feedback they have been craving. We have become the number one defensive side in our competition after sitting at number 8 in the competition last season. I believe the data that we have been able to secure and show our players have been a contributor to this.
